The purpose of this position is to direct the activities and operations of the Fire department and develop, implement, and assess department goals.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities: Supervises staff by prioritizing and assigning work, conducting performance evaluations, ensuring adequate staff training and adherence to policies and procedures, maintaining a safe work environment, and making hiring, termination, and disciplinary recommendations. Determines department goals and establishes short and long-range plans for the continued development and maintenance of fire and life safety systems. Develops, manages, and amends emergency management and disaster plans for the City and makes recommendations for amendments, updates, and improvements in fire codes and other related emergency ordinances. Administers and monitors the departmental budget, including allocating resources and approving expenditures. Monitors legislative activities, training activities, and educational programs related to fire and life safety issues in order to enhance the effectiveness of the department. Attends and participates in community events as the representative of the department.

Licensing and Certifications: North Carolina Emergency Medical Technician. National Incident Management Certification. North Carolina Fire Officer Level IV. North Carolina Fire Instructor Level II. North Carolina Hazardous Material Operations. Valid North Carolina Driver’s License.

Working Conditions / Physical Requirements: Positions in this class require: standing, walking, sitting, talking, hearing, fine dexterity, handling, reaching, pushing/pulling, lifting, carrying, vision, foot controls. Medium Work: Exerting 20 - 50 pounds occasionally, 10-25 pounds frequently, or up to 10 pounds constantly. Incumbents may be subjected to physical hazards, extreme temperature, respiratory hazards.
Required Experience: Bachelor’s Degree in Fire Science or related field from an accredited college or university, with at least fifteen (15) years of experience in fire service with at least seven (7) years supervisory experience at a chief officer level; or an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job.
Annual Salary: $94,762.50
